Bet Like a Pro: A Guide to Football Betting Terms

Football betting has its own set of terms and terminology and slang. To be responsible better and make profit, you need to know about these terms and we are here to help you. Here are some common terms used in football betting.

Direct Win

This bet means that you predict which team will win the match. There are three possibilities in a football match.

  1. Home Win: The home team will win the match.
  2. Away Win: The away team will win the match.
  3. Draw: The game will end in a draw.

Usually, in betting sites, Home win is represented by ‘1’, Away win is represented by ‘2’ and a draw is represented by ‘X’.

Both teams to score (BTTS)

This means betting on whether the both teams in a match will score at least one goal or not. 

Over/Under Goals

This means betting on whether the total number of goals will be over or under a specified number. For eg. betting on ‘Over 2.5 goals’ means that the total number of goals must be at least 3 or more for the bet to win.

Double Chance

Double Chance bet provides more possibility for a bet to win. Typically there are three possible outcomes in double chance:

  1. Home win or draw (1X) : The home team either wins or draws the match.
  2. Away win or draw (2X) : The away team either wins or draws the match.
  3. Home win or Away win (12) : Either of the teams wins the match but shouldn’t end in a draw.

Correct Score

Betting on the final score of the match. For eg. Barcelona 2 – 2 Real Madrid.

Odds

Odds are basically the probability of a particular outcome occurring. Typically they are represented as a decimal, fraction or moneyline. Odds are basically used to calculate how much you can earn by placing a bet of specified amount. 

For eg. if you place a bet of $100 at odds of 1.6, you can earn $160 where $100 is your investment and $60 is your profit.

Accumulator Bet (Acca)

Accumulator bet is the combination of multiple single bets. The odds from each selection or each single bet is multiplied with each other to form a big odds. All the selections must be won in order to win the accumulator bet.

Handicap Betting

In handicap betting,  a team is given a goal advantage or disadvantage. Suppose a football match between Barcelona and Sevilla. A handicap of -1.5 to Barcelona means that Barcelona is given a disadvantage of 1.5 goals. In order to win this bet, Barcelona must win the game with at least 2 goals difference. For eg:

  1. Barcelona 2 – 1 Sevilla : The bet is lost.
  2. Barcelona 3 – 1 Sevilla : The bet is won.

Bookmaker (Bookie)

It is the company or betting sites or can be a person where you can place your bets. For eg. Bet365.

In-Play Betting (Live Betting)

This involves betting on the match that is currently being played.

Similarly there are other terms commonly used in football betting:

Clean Sheet

Betting on whether a team will keep a clean sheet without conceding a single goal.

Half-Time/Full-Time (HT/FT)

Betting on the result of the match at half time and result at full time independently.

First Half Betting

Betting on the outcome of the match including goals, cards, corners, etc in the first half of the match or the first 45 minutes of the match.

Second Half Betting

Betting on the outcome of the match including goals, cards, corners, etc in the second half of the match.
